Dorothy Hope Smith (1895-1955) was a noted illustrator, most well-known for creating the portrait of the Gerber Baby in 1928. The model for the Gerber Baby was Ann Turner, the daughter of cartoonist Leslie Turner and his wife, Bethel Turner.

Dorothy Hope Smith was married to Perry Barlow, the famed New Yorker cartoonist, whom she met when they were both students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The couple married in 1922, eventually moving to New York City to pursue their illustration careers. Smith's illustration specialty was portraying babies and children, and she became one of the "Ivory Soap Baby" illustrators for Procter and Gamble. Additionally, Smith illustrated for numerous magazines and books. As Perry Barlow was color blind, Dorothy often did the color work for him on his New Yorker covers. After her passing in 1955, Peter Barlow, Dorothy and Perry's son, took over the color assistance for his father.

This wonderful original illustration appeared in "Eight O'Clock Stories", written by Robert Gordon Anderson, and published in 1923 by Putnam. The piece is titled, The Election Bonfire, with a caption stating, And up it blazed, throwing shadows on the barn. Lovely ink work, and a terrific example of Smiths figure work. The drawing comes a color guide on vellum, which is actually an original pen and ink and watercolor drawing, so its like getting two pieces for one price! Both originals are in Fine condition, though the vellum has wrinkling due to the watercolor being applied to the paper. 12x 10. Rare work by the creator of one of the most iconic images in the 20th century. $125.00 $100.00 + 8.00 Priority shipping.
