Tom Webster (18861962) was a sports cartooning mainstay in Londons Daily Mail, and by 1924 was reportedly the worlds highest paid cartoonist. Im pleased to offer a cool and stylish sports cartoon from 1921 by Webster. The cartoon was done in anticipation of the heavyweight boxing match between Georges Carpentier and Jack Dempsey, which was fought on July 2, in Jersey City. This was the first championship boxing match to be broadcast via radio, with a temporary radio station set up in Hoboken. The fight was broadcast to 61 cities. Dempsey won by a knockout in the fourth round. The cartoon features sweet portraits of the two boxers, done in Websters spare approach, straight out of the Phil May handbook. Really terrific stuff. The 12x 15 cartoon has a light crease that runs diagonally through the piece, but is barely noticeable. There is also some light creasing in the lower right corner, outside of the art area. All-in-all, the cartoon is quite presentable, and for the boxing fan, its a terrific item featuring one of boxings greatest champions. $200.00 + 13.00 Priority shipping.
