THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN (2008) by Matt Fraction & Salvador Larroca Issue #2, Variant Cover Reprinted on Omnibus Cover Graphite and ink on board Signed by Salvador Larroca 11" x 17" $1,500.00 How many collectors can say they own an Omnibus cover? Comic book movies (especially successful ones) bring the added bonus of curious new fans, but keeping them has always been a challenge. When Matt Fraction took the reigns of Iron Man, he catapulted to the forefront of comicdom as Robert Downey Jr. had done with the film franchise. Matt Fraction partnered with powerhouse writer Ed Brubaker on a revival of Immortal Iron Fist that helped earn him the 2008 Eagle Award for Favourite Newcomer Writer and Eisner nominations for Best New Series. He was also nominated for Best Single Issue for the Sensation Spider-Man Annual that first teamed him with Spanish artist Salvador Larroca. Based on their success together, the mold was set for the two to take on Iron Man in a new series set to launch the same week as the highly anticipated film starring Robert Downey Jr. as inventor Tony Stark. The planning was masterful, and the results paid off big time. Invincible Iron Man shot out of the gate at #1 and remained in the top ten monthly titles for most of its run. Individual issues are routinely reprinted to fulfill the demands of an ever expanding readership, and the creators were rewarded with an Eisner Award for Best New Series. When the success of the first Iron Man film made the sequel a foregone conclusion, Matt Fraction was tapped to be an onset advisor as well as to script the videogame based on the film –which coincidentally borrowed several elements from his and Larroca’s comic book. This page was a variant cover to the second issue of Invincible Iron Man, and was also reprinted on the cover of the Omnibus Edition. The issues bearing this cover were an incentive/reward, with one shipped for every 20 copies ordered. This was the first new issue released after the first Iron Man film opened, and as such was solicted months beforehand. Salvador Larroca covers are extremely rare. They are almost never offered for sale, as his artwork sells before the issue in which it appears is actually printed. Often, an artist will be working three to four issues ahead of production, and in today's digital age, once the artwork is scanned and uploaded to the printer's ftp server, the art is free for the artist to do with it what they want. This playful piece, picturing Iron Man in roller skates came from a private collector who obtained the artwork before the first issue was released, and well ahead of the Iron Man mania that followed.
