A.R. (Albertine Randall) Wheelan was a terrific book and magazine illustration in the early part of the 20th century. Wheelan was one of the very first women cartoonists, though she does not have the contemporary acclaim of folks like Rose O'Neill and Grace Drayton. She was also the mother of Ed Wheelan, who later created the Minute Movies comic strip. This wonderful watercolor, done while Wheelan was in Europe, depicts two priests in Spain. The watercolor work is lovely, and Wheelan has done some delicate pen & ink work on the faces. She has also done some pen work on the color, hand and book on the priest on the right. The watercolor drawing was done on a lighter stock paper and laid down onto a heavier illustration board by Wheelan. The piece measures 12¼"x9¾" in total. The artwork is in very nice condition, and would mat up beautifully. $175.00 + 8.50 shipping.
