Jim Friel was a principle at Rory Root's Comic Relief Shop in San Francisco and now runs The Escapist in Berkeley. In the 1970s he worked on a handful of titles, including a pre-Cerebus aardvark-centric comic with Dave Sim for Power Comics, then Elfthing at Eclipse, and a smattering of assignment illustrations. As such his original artwork is scarce, but he was a presence at conventions throughout the 70s. This 13.5x18.75" color ink on thick illustration board drawing captures an awkward plant-to-human handshake in a way that highlights the absurdity of vegetable hero in the presence of a Norse God. It's got an educated outsider feel, but it transcends the realm of fan art, since the artist was a semi-professional. $600
