Complete 7-page story entitled ”Doomed To Loom”, featuring the life story of Robert Wadlow, the world’s tallest man. Drawn by Rick Parker (pencils & inks). Published in the Big Book of Freaks, published by Paradox Press, a division of DC Comics.

This story would be a great piece for a circus collector!

Condition: Signed by the artist. Originals measure 14-1/2” x 18-1/2” and are in Very Good or better condition. Pages 1 and 3 have some brown spots all over which can be seen in the scans. Pages 5 & ^ have a few of the same spots but its very minor. Page 4 has a missing paste-up in the 6th panel.
Robert Wadlow was the tallest person in recorded history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow reached 8 ft 11.1 in. in height and weighed 439 lb at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hyperplasia of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone.
He was taller than his father at age 8, and in elementary school they had to make a special desk for him due to his size. By the time he had graduated from Alton High School in 1936, he was 8 ft 4 in. After graduating he enrolled in college with the intention of studying law.
Wadlow became a celebrity after his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus. He continued participating in tours and public appearances, though only in his normal street clothes. His shoes were provided to him free of charge by a company for which he did promotional work and appearances.
On July 4, 1940 (11 days before his death), a faulty leg brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent infection. Doctors treated him with a transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened, and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep at the age of 22.
Rick Parker, now a Maine resident, is the artist of the Papercutz Slices series of illustrated graphic novels parodying famous children’s books and movies, like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Harry Potter, Twilight, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games and The Walking Dead. In the past Rick drew MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head Comic Book for Marvel and was the artist of The Introductory Pages of Tales From The Crypt featuring the Crypt Keeper, The Vault Keeper and The Old Witch. Rick also teaches drawing and comics creation in Maine.
